Synopsis

By The Sea is a poetic documentary short film that traces the time a group of friends spends by the sea. Through small, ordinary moments, such as fishing, journeys, and conversations, the film explores the time spent together, changing lives, and the human sense of belonging. Amid all these moments, the sea finds its place as a silent witness to life’s transience and the memories left behind.

Director’s Statement

By The Sea emerged not so much from a desire to construct a narrative as from the motivation to explore a theme through which I felt deeply connected to very human emotions. There was no specific plan at any stage of the film. Instead, I sought out moments that could evoke the same sense of nostalgia, that familiar bittersweetness, and the sweet memories that surface from time to time in every viewer.

Although life is lived in the moment, its traces remain with us forever. We carry our memories with us throughout our lives—in objects, photographs, cities, and people. The fact that memories are fleeting does not make them worthless. On the contrary, precisely because they come and go, we imbue them with great meaning.

For this reason, the film does not seek to trigger a specific emotion in the viewer. Rather, it aims to take everyone to their own story, to the place where they seek to belong, and to their own seas.
